Health issues

I recently wrote a number of articles for the health website www.hitafit.com. They had to be written in American English – hence the spellings. This has been a very interesting diversion from my copywriting on engineering and industrial issues. I am always keen to make people aware of the scientific facts behind any subject and to make the science easy to understand.

Is a dazzling smile always a good thing?

Posted on 17/07/2013

A nice smile gives a great first impression, and may well reflect good health as well as a bright personality, but I do feel that many people have taken artificial enhancement of their smile to the extreme. By that I mean teeth whitening. Visit website

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Posted on 16/07/2013

If you’re a man and you’re having trouble urinating, I would advise you to get to your doctor without delay – but don’t assume the worst. While it’s important to be aware that prostate cancer is a serious danger that we men face in life, it could well be that what you’re suffering from is the very common condition of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Computer-related health issues

Posted on 15/07/2013

Like many people today, I spend most of each day working in front of a computer screen... and then in my own time I surf the internet and interact with friends via the various social networking sites. Visit website

Are you a workaholic?

Posted on 14/07/2013

I'm not sure if I'm a workaholic but there are definitely times when I think I am in danger of becoming one. In this article I would like to talk about workaholics and time management. The two subjects are closely linked but there is, in my eyes, a clear distinction between being a workaholic and managing your time badly. Visit website

Water – how much is healthy?

Posted on 13/07/2013

I’d like to be able to tell you exactly how much water you should drink every day to remain healthy, but life isn’t quite that simple. What I do know is that water is very important to our health, so it’s better to drink a little too much than to risk being dehydrated. Visit website

Stress and peace of mind

Posted on 12/07/2013

For me, the ultimate aim in life is peace of mind. No matter how much we achieve in our lives, or how financially comfortable we become through our efforts, we will not be happy if in the process we suffer a constant excess of stress. Visit website

Common cold and flu: what’s the difference?

Posted on 11/07/2013

If you’re experiencing symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, a stuffy or runny nose and a sore throat, it’s likely that you’ve caught a common cold. But could it be flu? Well answer this question: if I was to drop a twenty dollar bill on the floor, a few feet away from you, would you pick it up? If you are suffering from flu, you will probably feel too ill to do so. Headache causes and remedies

Posted on 10/07/2013

After a whole lifetime’s experience of headaches, one thing I can tell you for sure is that this page is not long enough to list all of the possible causes and remedies! You should, of course, consult a doctor if the problem is accompanied by other worrying symptoms, but statistics show that less than 1% of headaches are caused by a dangerous medical condition. Arrhythmia - my heart goes boom

Posted on 09/07/2013

I’m pleased to say my heart has never actually given me a real cause for concern, and there is very little history of heart trouble in my family, but there are some issues I'd like to mention here. Visit website

Alcohol – poison or medicine?

Posted on 08/07/2013

If you read a headline today suggesting you should drink more alcohol to be healthy, based on some new piece of research, I strongly advise you to view it with suspicion. It’s likely that other scientists will soon be telling you the opposite. Visit website

Healthy longevity: is it possible?

Posted on 07/07/2013

Given the choice, most of us would like to live a longer life. At the same time, most would agree that the quality of life is more important than its quantity. I’ve noticed that as I approach a ‘certain age’ my body seems to be wearing out in some ways and I am facing new problems. The age I reach, and how much I enjoy my later life, will depend on slowing down that wear and dealing with the problems of ageing. Visit website
